The trailer is very poorly together, which is the biggest problem. It's basically an info-dump about every plot strand in the film and it just makes the movie seem ponderous and dull.
this is the international trailer which possibly explains the "dump as much of the storyline" technique which companies like to do for international releases and it also retains the original title "Writers" (for intl release, domestic-US release will be under Stuck in Love).
I've long ago decided to see movies not based on the trailer alone as I've been surprised by films with weaker trailers than this one.
Judging by the young fans (and I'm making an assumption about demographics here) tweets and posts on tumblr, a lot of people like the trailer. But again these are mostly Lily Collins and Logan Lerman fans.
I saw it in Toronto and I can tell you that what the trailer would indicate does not at all reflect the movie, although y'all probably know that's what they do with trailers.
For example, Logan's is a relatively small role. He's a big name right now so they're capitalizing on it. His name is more prominent and above Nat's because that's what his agent negotiated. It's done as part of contract talks. But this film is a coming-of-age story about Nat's character, primarily, as it is based on the writer's own life (and that is Nat's role, which he said in the Q&A).
That said, for Lerman fans, it's definitely a nice contrast to Perks. I saw them back-to-back. In one he's playing younger, in the other he's playing older than his actual age. Very few actors can do that convincingly. Some changes in hair, makeup, clothing, not shaving for a day or two, and his trademark -- being able to change his appearance/personality with facial expressions, body language, posture, even his walk...and, of course, his voice which he raised for Perks and lowered for Stuck.
Here's my article with the trailer and capsule review (non-spoiler), with links to my full-length review (also non-spoiler) and photos I took of the Q&A:
read your IMDB review larry, thanks. Substantive as always.
I saw an interview given by the director Josh Boone at TIFF and he said that when he first finished the script in 2010 the actor he really wanted to get it to was Logan Lerman because he wanted him to play Rusty (Wolff's character) but he didn't know how. So by the time the film was going to be finally made, Logan had gotten a bit more mature and he offered him the college-age role instead while Nat Wolff took on the Rusty role. I think, judging from reviews I've read so far, it was a good choice in the end.
Logan said it was nice to be offered the role for a change instead of having to audition for it.
Ha...today FirstShowing.net posted the trailer as though it was just released (although they do credit ComingSoon for "bringing it to their attention," and they posted it 4 days ago, after I posted it on my site). http://www.firstshowing.net/2013/watch-greg-kinnear-lily-collins-in-jo sh-boones-writers-trailer/?uid=f74d26302f0904b936682278795cbc3049966c9 4 Pffft
this is funny. Also larry-411 it never fails to astonish me how a number (okay, a lot) of online sites don't even bother to do basic research, even sites like the Film Stage or firstshowing or comingsoon. The fans who saw the trailer on the PVR (a film distributor for Asia) youtube account and started spreading it via tumblr and then twitter. And you did post it ahead of these other larger sites. Also to lump Millenium together with PVR is funny. Millenium has US distribution rights and had no hand in selling the film to international distributors like PVR. Millenium hasnt even released a trailer under the US title Stuck in Love. Some sites didn't even bother to check if there was US release date (19 april) and speculated that this will be probably be a VOD release or a combo of both (which isn't a bad idea actually after Arbitrage's success in this format).
It's funny (and you're 100% correct) and it's frustrating, as well, especially when I see a tweet from FirstShowing (which is how I knew about this) calling it "Writers" and acting like they have it first -- and they have 27,209 followers (I only have 9916), so then many other sites RT their tweet and send people to their site. Not only that, but Alex at FS follows me, has tweeted @ me and RT me before, and KNOWS I tweeted it 4 days ago.
In fact, Nat didn't even know about it until I tweeted it -- then he RT my tweet from @natandalex, which then resulted in many more RT.
And now other sites, who KNOW I posted it, are RT FirstShowing's tweet as though it's something new. Granted, FS credited CS, but still...not very fair. But this is par for the course.
I make a point of primarily reporting on films I've actually seen and reported on and, as you know, I'm a stickler for details and facts. And if I get it wrong -- and you or someone else here points that out -- I correct it and credit you.
ComingSoon says the name was changed from "Stuck in Love" to "Writers" and is being released as "Writers" in the U.S. Isn't it the other way around?
Unfortunately, not all my colleagues play fair (or smart). My goal is to get the fans excited. Their goal is to get site hits. That's the difference.
so true larry-411 and they try to gloss over their obvious lack of research and information by making glib comments on a film they haven't seen, speculating that it'll probably be released "sometime this year" etc. etc. LOL
Keep watching and reviewing and doing actual research larry look forward to your faves of this year.
by the way, josh boone @writersmovie tweeted recently that he has some very big news. hope he got financing for his next project.
