watched this at the gym, holy hell this was terrible!

I'm sorry, it's 2014.....we can NOT have 'everything will be alright as long you're a rich white family' ending. We just can't. I don't care. It's not an exciting story to tell.

Plot: How does an attractive successful family deal with love?

Ending: Everything works out.

This is why steroid abuse is bad, Kids.

reply

was there steroid use in the movie? I don't get it.

You stated that you watched the movie at the Gym, then proceeded to rage on it. Get it now?

reply

Hmm I think I get your joke, but I don't understand if you liked the movie or not or have an issue with something I said in terms of critiquing it

reply

I did like the movie, especially Lily Collins. I thought it was good for its genre. Not saying it's Citizen Kane or the Godfather, but it got the job done. You obviously didn't like it, and can critique it anyway you like. I just thought it was kind of over-the-top. If you didn't like this movie you probably just don't care for this genre, but what did you expect from a movie with the word LOVE in the title?

reply

There are plenty of romantic-comedies that do a good job of avoiding the obvious and the cliché, but yes the majority of them DO end like the one in Stuck in Love, and that's why this genre gets such a bad name...

Oh come on, the mother shows up on Thanksgiving and says I'm reading to come back...happily ever after. It's just not acceptable.

reply

I'm not even sure I would call this a rom-com. Maybe a Rom-Dram-with-a-little-com along the lines of Life as a House. I agree, the movie was formulaic and predictable. But it doesn't really matter. Movies like this are intended to evoke emotion from the audience and make us think about our own relationships, and I think this one succeeds there. Predictable endings are kinda part of the deal. Again, I'm not saying it was a great movie, or even the best in class, but I enjoyed it for the actors and characters. It doesn't have to be a Scorsese classic to be enjoyable.

reply

But how are we supposed to relate to this family? The best romantic-drama movies, are the ones that do what you said...makes one reflect about their own relationships and their own life in general. OR it's a really interesting story. Those are the two classic example of a good romantic-drama.

This movie does neither by a long shot. I can't reflect about my own relationships because the whole family is just UNRELATABLE. If anything, it just makes me hate the upper-class because you see how frivolous their own problems are. That's all I could think of, and considering how a majority of the country is NOT a rich successful family, I'm surprised that a movie like this could be made in the first place.

And the "not everything has to be Citizen Kane" argument is such a cop-out. No one is saying that. These kind of movies have two paths for success. Cute & funny or real & good... this isn't cute, this isn't funny, and it's definitely not real.

I've probably spent too much time defending this film. I stated from the start that I didn't think it was a great movie. I watched it on a lark and ended up enjoying it more than I expected. That's all. Truth is my positive feelings toward this film are mostly because of Lily Collins. I had heard a little about her, but had never seen her in anything, and I was taken by her beauty and screen presence. The other actors did an adequate job, but Lily Collins shined, IMO, and I look forward to seeing more of her.

reply

Shined? Really?

I thought she was the weakest link in a pretty shoddy production.
I guess she had nice hair ... that's basically all I got from her character.

reply

I agree 100%

Who the hell watches a movie at the gym?

Especially this kind of movie, either you're not giving your work out full attention or your not giving the movie full attention.

Any man that don't want to get killed better clear out on back.

reply

My reaction exactly. Who on earth works out to this kind of movie?

Especially this kind of movie, either you're not giving your work out full attention or your not giving the movie full attention.

Precisely. You need to watch this movie at the right place at the right time. If you're going to watch a movie at the gym watch Transformers, you can turn your brain off for that and all those action sequences will get you pumped.

You heart me? What is that? Is that like I love you for pussies?
