Question about Something Shawn Maguire Said

In the scene towards the beginning of the film in which Shawn Maguire is talking with the two Albanians Danny brought to him, Shawn talks a little bit about his previous business experience. He said, "I would fix a boxing match or two, but mostly I was a grinder. If you wanted to open a butcher shop, and the bank said *expletive* on the loan, you came to me."

What is a grinder? Is that a loan shark? I searched online and couldn't find an answer. Thank you.

My great uncle in Western Pennsylvania was called the family grinder because he would loan money to relatives for a fixed interest rate much lower than what the bank would charge. (my parents built their first home in 1955 using a 2% loan. The 2% was a flat 2% not like a home mortgage.)

I think it means someone who doesn't make huge amounts of money but gradually accumulates it by either investing it or loaning it out.
