"White Savior" line felt like it was written in 2016, not the 1200's.

Way to take you out of the moment. Ridiculous line. Most likely the Asian woman would have never even met a white guy before Polo, and would have thought him a barbarian, and herself superior.

I don't even remember that line, so it must not have seemed very glaring to me. What was the context and/or episode and character who spoke it?

reply

Me Lin on the boat with Polo while they are looking for the Child Song Emperor.

reply

Oh... are you SURE she wasn't acting like she was annoyed at him and mocking him? That seems more her style.

reply

I'm not upset with the character, it's the writer that wrote it, and the director that allowed it.

reply

The first few episodes there were quite a few moments that felt like modern lines/perspectives in the 'ancient' setting but it stops happening soon after.

She's mocking him, not praising him. She's looking down on him. You're completely right about your second point.

Felt the same. At this time Europe was *beep* and in no way considered a more advanced, prosperous region than the East. The very concept of a "White Saviour" would not have even made any sense.

Marco Polo is more of an anomaly. Some curious stranger from the West.
