Wow the same character in 3 recent shows

Carry (Homeland) Sonya (the Bridge) and now Catherine - all mental defectives who go out, pick up strange men and have cold sex with them and give them the boot. WTF?! Can't we have a smart, ORIGINAL, relatively stable female lead in a cop type show?

You forgot The Killing Chick.

LOL @ Carry

are you lol'ing because you are a simpleton or do you have something to say about it?

You are a derp.

Confirmed. Simpleton. Thanks for playing.

reply

Carry. You lose. Congratulations on turning 12.

Laughing out loud at a stranger misspelling a first name = simpleton. I suppose if there is a grammatical error and a misspelling you roll on the floor laughing your ass off?

I agree. No one seems capable of writing a strong, competent, likeable female character to lead a show. She's either a ball busting bitch, way too touchy feely, or mentally unstable.

Looking at it now, Ziva on NCIS and Benson on SVU, Prentiss and JJ on Criminal Minds, Kenzi on NCIS:LA, Catherine on CSI are pretty stable but they're part of an ensemble. It's like a female character can only be stable if there are a half dozen other actors in the show with her.

I really like Lillian (she can be both a bitch but also likeable, competent and respected in her role as leader and no mental issues) in Intelligence but she's a supporting character not the lead. She's also respectful of the people around her. Another quality females leads are lacking.

If by "stable", you mean boring and pedestrian, then congratulations, those shows hit the spot perfectly. Maybe cable is just not for you.

A character can have issues. In fact, a character working day in and day out under that kind of stress, surrounded by crime, *should* have issues. The men too. Just because the Law and Order/NCIS/CSI crap put robots instead of people in the parts, mainly not to have to worry to much about character development, doesn't mean it's believable.

The problem with this character is that she's a shoddy sketch of a pathological mess. They were really just trying too hard to make her "compelling". Like the other Danish character from Broen/Bron/The Bridge.

Comparing her with brilliantly crafted characters like Carrie on Homeland or Linden in the Killing either comes from a gross caricaturization or a profound lack of understanding of characterization. Either way, maybe cable is just not for you and you should stick with commercial networks. Simpler characters.

The other 2/3rds of my post that you neglected to quote defined what I felt qualified as "unstable". And no where did I imply that a character couldn't have "issues". But of course quoting me correctly wouldn't have provided you with a soapbox upon which to jump. Maybe comprehending posts in complete context just isn't for you.

Having "issues" is very different from having a mental illness which most of the characters mentioned on this thread have. Mental illness which would disqualify them from carrying a gun and thus make them unfit and ineligible for field duty.

No where did I mention Carrie or Linden in my post. So perhaps you should quote the correct "you" to whom you want to dictate viewing habits.

You have a point in saying the show is @ a mundane quality of life or rather you said specifically more along the lines of specifically pedestrian.

You should follow your own advice *beep* She gave him the boot after he banged her.

and now she found him again... seems to be a mutually beneficial situation.

I think these types of characters are representative, first of all of acceptance, we as society are becoming more accepting of the new normal, being that nobody is really "normal", but of course shows would have to exaggerate these "not normal" qualities, to make them more interesting and edgy...

And someone like you can always blame Dexter, and Dexter chicks...

I wouldnt know I stopped watching.

Well, at least she is a well-rounded person, you have more a chance of meeting her than say "Madonna.."

Ah, the old IMDB high and mighty type. How original. Watch the show before you make such comments. No reasonably intelligent person who watches that show would disagree with the statement that she is unstable. That is why she NEEDS the father figure to try to keep her grounded. Without him, she could not be able do the job which is why his talk of retirement brings her panic.
