I think she said that to mean two things. She did just find out about his past in the mental institution and his brother but I think she also meant it as code for being married. I don't think she thinks of marriage as being a good thing or something to respect. She didn't think twice about sleeping with a married man, and she probably resents her mother for staying married to her step-father.
