It looks like the LDS let their temples in some of these towns become gathering places for loons - some of whom talked themselves into killing for convenience.

The trouble with the interviewees is that almost everyone associated with Mommy & Daddy Demon were 3/4 as crazy as they were.

Mormonism has a fairly distinctive doctrine of personal revelation. That freedom to freewheel has resulted in a number of LDS offshoot cults, some polygamous, many toxic, some lethal. Some of these sub-cults run whole towns.

Jon Krakaur's book 'Under the Banner of Heaven' gets into that phenomenon.
