Can someone explain the neighbors?

I don't understand their motive to kill the family...It didn't make sense. THe blonde woman said it was because they were so wealthy due to the booming business of the security alarms. What does one have to do with the other? They wanted to kill them over jealous they had more money? She made it sound like their success was causing the other families to suffer. THat didn't make any sense.

And committing murder and getting that rage out of your system once a year during a 12 hour period makes enough sense that it saved a whole country? LOL

In this movie world, most everyone used any excuse to kill on Purge night.

Agreed. I loved this movie up until that point. Seeing as how they were ALL rich as hell, it made zero sense for the purging neighbors to want to kill the Sandins over them making more money than them. What pissed me off even more was the fact that Mrs. Sandin let them live after they were so willing to kill her and her kids before the homeless man came in for the save.

The idea is that all rich people are greedy and so envious of people richer than they are that they hate them and are willing to kill them. It's far-fetched but there's some truth in that characterization. The purge is about expressing your rage and getting revenge regardless of whether or not it makes any sense.

Greedy, jealous, petty...aren't most rich people like that? Plus there's a lot of critique on the so-called American Dream because the housewives wish what the other housewife has and the people who were born rich can't stand when people make their own fortune because it hurts their privileged sensibilities.
