Haven't scrolled through all of the messages here, so I'm sorry if this has been brought up, but....was anyone annoyed by the inconsistent accents in this film? I didn't mind the British accents but what was up with Cinderella and Red Riding Hood sounding like modern-day Americans?

I'm aware it's a fairy tale, but the story centers around people who live in the same small village and who would presumably speak with similar accents. I'm not saying they need to sound completely alike, but the fact that Anna Kendrick and the girl who played Red Riding Hood spoke as if they were modern-day Americans in some Broadway show seemed a bit off to me. But that's just my opinion. As another poster said, Anything can happen in the woods, I guess... =)
shareBut for the most part there was inner consistency among the accents. All of Cinderella's family spoke in American accents, as most of the actors are American. The Baker and his Wife were both British. Ditto that for Jack and his Mother. Rather than getting a collective accent for everyone, they allowed most of the cast to use their own dialect, but kept it internally consistent. The one that confused me the most was Johnny Depp using his Sweeney Todd British accent as the Wolf. Unless that's just his "Sondheim voice."

shareDirectors choice, chris pine wanted to go full British but Rob Marshall didn't want him to. The same goes for all the actors, chris is the only one in the film that has a mixture of British and American accent. Personally it didn't bother me at all it still works pretty well.

Just shows you how crappy of a director Marshall is when refuses an an actor suggestion to do something better and challenging for him to do. Again, the accents don't bother me anyway but still.

Threw me off too. They should all have German accents since the Grimm fairy tales are German.
