Nice Movie, But Felt Overcrowded
I get it that this was a mashup of Disney/Grimm's fairy tales and all. However, I think a more streamlined film would have made for a better viewing experience. The things that work on stage, don't always work well on film. It just felt to me like there were pieces missing from this movie. I have not seen the stage play so maybe that would fill in some of my gaps. It just seemed like everyone just kept happening upon each other at the exact time the plot needed them to. It felt forced. Also, having so many actors crammed into a 2-hour movie gave it an even more forced feel.
Having said that, the performances are good. Meryl Streep, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, and Daniel Huttlestone were standouts. Chris Pine had some good moments and has a very nice voice. Emily Blunt seemed kind of a one note character as the nagging wife. I didn't like her character at all.
The music wasn't anything joyous as you would expect from a Disney film. The one standout for me was "Your Fault" in which Jack, The Baker, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood all point fingers at each other. I liked the way the song is sung as well as how it was filmed. This was the high mark of the movie for me.
Not a bad little film and I'm sure kids will enjoy it. I would have liked to have seen the darker version of the stage play I hear so much about. I think that would have played better on film than just a rehash of old fairy tales.
My memory foam pillow says it can't remember my face. I can tell its lying.
