Is there a reason in particular this needed an all white cast?

I mean a cast of 19 people in a fantasy film where half the people have British accents and half the people have American accents and they couldn't have a single non white person?

reply

Fairy tale characters are usually portrayed as white because their origins are usually German or Swedish. Also, the actors in the original musical were white.

These are all medieval european fairy tales, and these characters as such, can only ever be white. Making any one of them some other race would be racist.

There were lots of non-white people in medieval Europe. There is DNA evidence in remains from the Bronze Age of people with African origins. Many of the Roman soldiers posted to the outposts of the empire were also African. Most of what is now Spain and parts of France were conquered by the Arabs, as were several parts of Eastern Europe, almost as far west as Vienna. People from North Africa traded with Southern Europe for many centuries. Othello ruled Venice etc. It is a modern, racist myth that Europeans have always been totally white.

Since the plot was based on white people's folk tales, this was one film that really does call for an all-white cast.

However, it does not call for a half-Brit-half-American cast, who make no effort to sound like they're from the same region. I mean, a witch with an American accent lives next door to a British baker and his wife? That really becomes grating, if you watch the film more than once.

On a vaguely related note, I watched this film with my puppy and he could not abide the witch.

Her voice really grated on him, otherwise he didn't mind the film.
