Les Misérables (2012) was miles better than this.
It helps that, unlike Rob Marshall, Tom Hooper respects the source material and did his best to adapt the musical to the big screen, and it felt cinematic in its visuals and singing. The cinematography was unique and dynamic, and the editing certainly helps. Extravagant production design and costumes. The live singing helped the actors emote in their voices, which is far more important than trying to sound pretty. The actors were fantastic, especially Anne Hathaway. I know many dislike Russell Crowe in it but he's far better than whatever the *bleep* Johnny Depp did in this.
Disney's Into The Woods is the complete opposite of Les Misérables (2012). Obvious lip-syncing, actors who can't compare to those who've already done it before and better and can't stand in their own right, both singing and acting wise. Bad cinematography that's full of medium shots and a dull color scheme. Phoned-in costumes and art direction that has zero creativity. Overall, it's an absolute disgrace to musical film adaptations everywhere. Hell, or even beats Phantom of the Opera for me because at least I could laugh at that and I wasn't attached to the original musical anyway.
