Les Misérables (2012) was miles better than this.

It helps that, unlike Rob Marshall, Tom Hooper respects the source material and did his best to adapt the musical to the big screen, and it felt cinematic in its visuals and singing. The cinematography was unique and dynamic, and the editing certainly helps. Extravagant production design and costumes. The live singing helped the actors emote in their voices, which is far more important than trying to sound pretty. The actors were fantastic, especially Anne Hathaway. I know many dislike Russell Crowe in it but he's far better than whatever the *bleep* Johnny Depp did in this.

Disney's Into The Woods is the complete opposite of Les Misérables (2012). Obvious lip-syncing, actors who can't compare to those who've already done it before and better and can't stand in their own right, both singing and acting wise. Bad cinematography that's full of medium shots and a dull color scheme. Phoned-in costumes and art direction that has zero creativity. Overall, it's an absolute disgrace to musical film adaptations everywhere. Hell, or even beats Phantom of the Opera for me because at least I could laugh at that and I wasn't attached to the original musical anyway.

Les Mis felt too long though.

It's that man again!!

Better long than to have it cut essential plot elements to make it "family friendly".

Your obviously not a fan of lupines original play....im from the area of woods this play was written about in lil' old Mansfield Ohio and mohican woods. The only thing disney *beep* up was not getting bernadette peters to reprise her role as the witch...Meryl is trash comparatively. I actually cast most of the people they chose in my head in the late 90's the only thing i couldnt have done better was anna kendric shes perfect....Christine baranski is the perfect choice as is tracy ulman both whom i thought of immediately when picturing this as a movie...when i found out it was coming out i was ecstatic till i heard of the travesty that is Meryl playing the witch. The coloring of the woods is perfect to describe how dangerous they can be. You whom im replying to should stay of the internet if you cant be bothered to use some sense when it comes to a "review". Your review should be about the movie not some other movie you think is better.

Imo I can't stand Les Mis because the two leads are pretty awful.

Plus there's the anniversary show that I can always listen to so it's been completely discarded.

For me I like Into the Woods adaption. I've read about the differences to the story and seen a bit of the show on YouTube but I still think it's pretty good. Not the best adaption (that's Rent and Chicago imo) but still passable.

Seeing Les Mis was the most excruciating experience I've had in the cinema. It was two and a half hours of pure torture why they cast leads who can't carry a tune to save their life is beyond me.
Into The Woods on the other hand was pure pleasure. Great songs sung as you want to hear them.
