Was it possible to make a good movie out of this story?

Obviously they didn't, the finished film was godawful. But would it have been possible to make a movie about the real-life Monuments Men, if the property had been placed in competent hands?

I'm reading the book now, and am thinking not. The real "Monuments Men" worked separately and were scattered all over Europe, and kept going after the war ended, there was no "Dirty Dozen" style mission with all of them. Is it possible to make a coherent or enjoyable film about people working separately on a common mission?

I rather thought they did personally, enjoyed it myself anyway.

Why not?
What you described sounds more interesting and original then he cliché hollywood shoved on us.
It could make a good movie in the right hands. Or a great series.

I thought it was decent actually. It may have had some bad subplots and lackluster character development...but I still enjoyed it.

The trailer never promised anything else. If people wanted to see a film about the first half of WWII...or the middle of WWII...they should have watched something else.

Well, I was kind of hoping to see a movie that bore some resemblance to the book, which was a good, solid, interesting non-fiction book about a previously untold true story. But of course Hollywood thought audiences wanted to see a weak standard action-team story instead, which BTW starred actors who were about twice the age of the real art historians.

If I hadn't read the book I would have liked it more... but I can't imagine I would have ever liked it much.

I'm actually just watching it now

(I don't give a crap about spoilers, IF I didn't want to know about the movie I wouldn't be here now)

IT is NEVER smart to expect historical accuracy from Hollywood
