Not sure what this movie was trying to be

It seem fragmented in it's attempt to tell a story. The squatters served no purpose in the movie. Why the hell were they there. The movie would've been the same without them.

At times it was trying to be a comedy, at times it was trying to be an action movie, and at times it was trying to be an emotional drama. And none of it blended. It seemed like seperate short stories that bounced back and forth.

It wasn't that bad of a movie. With the right directing, it would've been pretty good.

The squatters were there to reinforce theme. Ethan missed his own daughter's birth because he was so busy working. He might go down the same path again because he's lying to his family.

They are also there to add on a few minutes here and there. And to show how they also change him and make him a softer person. Notice he doesn't kill the chubby father guy, or the Italian accountant, and starts to become "softer".

I do agree with your assessment on the changes of tone. The opening scene had a villain decapitate a female spy with an elevator, and then he's doing bike montages and having unrealistic fight scenes in a French supermarket.

It was a decent action flick, but not something I'd watch again or buy on home video.

You're exactly right, rujane. That movie suffered from the same fragmention this movie suffered from. IMO, that one was worse.

Don't forget Costner channeling his Bale batman voice inconsistently throughout

Is that why Costner often reminded me of Michael Keaton???
