He had a glioblastoma (brain tumor) which had metastasized to his lungs (which they played up with the cough). It's hard to say he be cured without continue treatment of whatever that drug was, but it seemed to at least get the disease under control and extend his prognosis.
When, at the end, Tina tells Zooey that he'll stay "as long as he can" it seemed like they weren't trying to imply a cure, just a prolonging.
He will live long enough for sequels 2+3...
