Hailee Steinfeld and the Slippery Slope
Two thoughts ... Kevin Costner must have lost money in in the stock market or bet on a bad horse. He laid two movies in us in short dispatch when it seemed his career was gently fading in the sunset. One movie was fair to mediocre (Jack Ryan: Shadow Dispatch) and other was this donkey.
The Second thought is that Hailee Steinfeld should be learning her trade as an actor in less prominent roles. She knocked it out of the park in "True Grit" working under the direction of the Coen's and supported by guardian angels like Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon. Hell, I could have played Mattie Ross with their assistance. Since then, she has appeared in three consecutive bombs (3 Days to Kill, Enders Game, & Romeo & Juliet). Hailee will appear in The Homesman (November 7, 2014 release)along with a star-studded cast that assures her role will be proportional to the quality of those actors cast. Beyond this, she has one movie "in the can" and three in "post".
Hollywood is more exploitive now than ever before. If a star is born, they are only given but so many bombs before they disappear from the silver screen. Hailee is a classic example where she gives us a beguiling character like Mattie Ross and Hollywood takes her to the races. Thus over exposing the poor girl while destroying her ability to grow and mature as an actor.
Mattie Ross has been a death trap for two young people (Kim Darby & Hailee)who stepped out of the role with great acclaim and into hole filled with snakes. The only Mattie who continues her ascent up the career ladder is the "40 year old Mattie" played by Elizabeth Marvel. This might be the tortoise to bet on in a race.
