Amazing, complex show
I'm almost finished the second season and have found Please Like Me to be one of the most original and entertaining shows I've seen in years. People on the imdb forum seem to generally like it. And those that don’t have some fair points. Josh's character can be off-putting. He's fairly self-absorbed and annoying at times. But that’s great television I think--a main character who's multi-faceted. Sweet and considerate at times (see the Scroggin episode)--and at other times you want to strangle him.
Some people have issues with Josh's romances on the show. It is true that everyone Josh has been with or shown an interest in Josh has been incredibly hot. I don't know--maybe that's the writer's (Josh's) conceit. Look at Woody Allen and all those movies where hot women were swooning over him. In real life would Diane Keaton have ever "la di da"d Woody Allen?
Other people have commented on the implausibility of Josh dumping Geoffrey. Again, I saw this as good and untypical writing. Geoffrey was spectacular to look at, no question, but was completely lacking a sense of humour (did he ever laugh or even smile once?). He seemed a bit vacant to me. It reminded me of another television great: Freaks and Geeks. Nerdy Sam is in love with the completely unattainable hot cheerleader Cindy. And eventually (amazingly) he does win her over. After a while, though, he finds that they're not compatible at all. "She’s kind of boring," Sam tells his friends and then goes on to dump her. I saw the same thing with Please Like Me. Geoffrey was a pretty face and was nice, but not really fun at all.
I really think that Please Like Me is a winner. Clever writing, well drawn characters and wonderful acting (Debra Lawrance is fantastic). Looking forward to season 3.
