Thai lady's accent terrible?

Whenever I hear the thai wife speak I sort of cringe. It sounds like an american doing an asian accent to try to be funny.

Anybody else feel this way or am I way off base?

You're more or less right there. I've heard Renée Lim speak naturally (in her role in East West 101) and she has a pretty conventional Australian accent (just as well as she was born in Australia), so it's jarring to me too as I know that she's putting it on, and I don't think that she's doing a particularly good job of it either. Renée is of Chinese-Malaysian decent in real life. Some of her inflections are pretty accurate, but for the most part, her character seems too much like a grotesque caricature for her own good (which is where At Home With Julia also suffered with Amanda Bishop's ridiculously cartoonish impersonation of former Australian PM Julia Gillard).

How did Josh's father meet her?

I love Mae, she's hilarious. My favorite scene is in the first season when she's trying to convince Alan not to buy the Porsche. "Not cool."

I really like the character but I agree her accent is a bit off putting at times.

reply

Yeah, a Thai accent isn't like that. Mae's accent sounds more like Lim's ancestral Malaysian-Chinese and Singlish.
