Mental and dietary counseling.

So, i had a bypass several years ago, it was necessary for me to have counseling and dietary classes before I was even considered for the surgery. I don't understand that these patients are just sent home with instructions to lose a certain amount of weight first, but aren't offered counseling until after they have failed and are depressed and discouraged. Perhaps some need an antidepressant as well, as I did.

i was JUST coming to post this same thing... so many of these people have eaten only fast food and frozen processed crap made of chemicals, sugar, and fat their whole lives. They have NO CLUE about fresh food, or what constitutes healthful eating. They have no idea what to eat, or how to prepare a simple fresh nutritious meal.

Why doesn't Dr Now include some basic nutrition information and show them how to make some basic healthy meals as part of their program, so they can learn something before they go home? SO many of them fail at first and either gain, or don't lose much - because they can only go back to what they know... and they think frozen fish sticks and tater tots are 'healthy food' because it's not cheeseburgers from the drive-through. It makes no sense to send them home without a shred of information.

They do get counseling, diet plans, exercise plans, etc, but for some reason they don't include it in the show. It was shown once, with the lady who lost her excess weight and then joined Dr. N's staff as the person who leads pre and post op counseling. Dr. N often asks the patients who don't lose much weight, or even gain weight, if they are following the diets he gave them. I guess the producers want to focus the show on the patient's behavior and lifestyle, and less on the doctors office.
