Husbands/Boyfriends not driving

Has anyone noticed how many of the husbands and boyfriends do not drive. I was just watching Dottie squeezing herself in the driver's seat and her husband Chris sitting in the passengers seat. The same for Lupe and her boyfriend. Maybe I missed it in another thread. I would think it would be very dangerous for someone over 600 lbs. to be driving.

reply

Maybe TLC has them drive so we can see how difficult it is for them to get into a driver's seat.

reply

I don't think Christina's then-husband, Zack, drove either. I thought it might be because they didn't have a car and Christina's parents weren't going to allow him to drive theirs.

I also noticed Gilbert (Lupe's boyfriend) didn't drive and I believe it was Lupe's niece that drove them to Texas.

That doesn't seem like a life that any of those men would want especially at such a young age. It might be different if they were in their 50s or 60s. Christina's husband acted as if he liked the part of being her caregiver when Dr. Now asked what did he do for a job. He proudly said his job was looking after Christina.

reply

Lupe is married to Gilbert.

I was wondering that too. It had to be very uncomfortable as well as dangerous the way Dottie squeezed into the driver's seat.

In some cases it could be that they might lose their disability if they have too many assets. For the ones that have decent vehicles, maybe they aren't on disability at all, maybe they do work. I know it's fun to bash them for being disabled for something they do to themselves but the truth is it's all just speculation. Nobody truly knows where most of them get their money. I'd say a lot of them are but not all of them.

reply

With the kind of cars many of them drive I'm guessing the show is leasing them. Most of these people don't work and the boyfriends, girlfriends, wives & husbands also aren't working a 9-5 job because they mention it. Notice -not all- but many of them look new. I can't speak for all the states but in this area they don't count assets for people who get public assistance & SSI. They sure don't do it if you get a disability check from paying in Social Security when employed.

I want to know if TLC provides them with the vehicles. They drive several different cars during the episode and they always seem way out of their price range.

Yes, I think so because someone posed this question to Lola on Facebook because she was driving a different, new car each time they showed her. She said they were rentals the show paid for.

reply

It makes me wonder why the show paid for only a Hyundai Sonata for Lupe's trip from California to Texas instead of a van. Dr Now even said that she almost died because of it.

I had posted a few times how - like with their cars - once they get to Houston some are living in really nice apartments or homes, and others appear to be living in public housing.

Joe and his mother looked like they were living in government housing and in Pauline and her sons episode they were living in a really nice apartment complex. I don't know how they determine who gets what type of car and where their housing will be in Houston.

reply

I don't think Lupe and her husband had a car in Houston because her husband complained about having to walk so far to go grocery shopping. In the newest episode Ashley's husband Daniel didn't have a driver's license. She didn't say why unless I missed it. Ashley had a really nice car but I wondered why she would have a car she could barely get in and out of without the horn honking because her stomach was mashing up against it. Some of the things on this show make absolutely no sense to me.

No, they never said because I wondered that too. As the OP said it's really strange so many of them don't drive, or even work.

Yep, and last night when all four wheels were stolen off of Ashley's car. My first thought was; is this scripted for dramatic effect? It was odd no one heard or saw anything that they didn't call the police, or that there were no cameras on the building that would show people coming and going that the thief would have been caught.

I don't know if this is true or not but someone on Facebook said they heard it was an "apartment scam," whatever that means. Maybe it's like if they don't pay their rent they steal their wheels and they can't get them back until they pay past due rent.

reply

that was pretty crazy last night when her belly beeped the horn but she had the biggest belly I have ever seen on this show, her mother was such an enabler, I wouldnt want someone this obese driving me around, as dr now said, she could die at any minute.

reply

The show must lend them the cars and rent the apartments in Houston for them.

A lot of these husbands/boyfriends aren't exactly the cream of the crop when it comes to significant others. They often don't work, nor even have licenses, and it's quite common for them to be on the lower end of the intelligence scale. I'm sure that some of them really do care, but others are simply there because they know that they can get a free ride, as they know that the women don't exactly have a bevy of men to choose from.

Ashley looked very pretty after her makeover. I have a feeling once she gets down to her ideal weight and Dr. Now does her skin surgery to get rid of her stomach she will be like a new woman. She has a sweet personality, seems intelligent, has a job, and her own car. It won't be long before Daniel will be history.

reply

Agreed. This happens quite often, as we have seen with follow ups and such. The old BFs or husbands are gone once the women start to feel better about themselves and feel that they have more worth and don't need to scrape the bottom of the barrel.

Christina did that. It did make me wonder, though, if it didn't have more to do with her losing the weight, then her ex Zach not being able to get paid to be her caregiver anymore. I think the way SSI works (which I believe she was getting), is if Zack had to get a job and was making over $800 a month, the spouse receiving SSI can, and do, lose their benefits if they're married. She may have looked at it as "Let's see, I can either have a government check or a husband," and she picked the check. I don't blame her because I probably would've done that, too.

Taking care of somebody who's a 600+ lbs on a daily basis isn't a "free ride".

Aren't these women also "bottom of the barrel"? Is there something more (or anything at all) that they can offer to their boyfriends/husbands? These women are actually lower than the bottom of the barrel.

Also, boyfriends/husbands can live without these women, they don't need them on a daily basis. However, these overweight women do need boyfriends/husbands because they need constant help. So who needs who more?

Its pretty low what these women do - when they needs help then they have no problem with the bottom of the barrel, but as soon as they get better all of the sudden those boyfriends/husbands are not good enough for them.
