I know this is an obvious post but WTF!! Ive watched a few episodes and like most are amazed at what Im looking at.they act like they woke up one morning and found themselves like this but this takes time.I have known people who were big but these people are like human waterbeds.at what point in their lives did they think they should maybe get help and what about their relatives and friends or do they do this just to get on tv??
It's an addiction, and addicts are always in denial about how bad it is, they say they can handle it, they have it under control, and then when that doesn't work they decide they'll never be able to change, so they don't bother trying, sink further into depression, engage even more in their addiction. Few people JUST wake up one day and go 'oh gee, I think I'll quit smoking even though I have no immediately foreseeable reason to give up what I've been doing for 10 years and it makes me feel better when I'm stressed', or 'huh, I go clubbing every night and I'm having the time of my life, and yet I think I'll suddenly give up drinking'. For most people things have to reach a breaking point for them to consciously make that decision to change.
It must be nice to live in such an ivory tower that you seem to. "Most" family and friends? Try again. Well, a lot of them on the show are, but that's not reality. And try having a little compassion. There's no reason to call them 'fat slobs'.
yes I agree these people have serious problems but is still dont know how you can eat that much food without just getting sick, I mean there is only so much space in you stomach.
Your stomach actually gets larger the more you eat, that's how. And when you start reducing the amount of food you eat, eventually your stomach reduces as well.
I understand, but I cant get my head around how they can keep up that calorie intake day after day for years. I'm thinking about the ones who can't get out of bed. Didn't they think at some point that it was just going to get worse from there? There had to be some period of a few years where they were on the threshhold of immobility.
I think a lot of them have mental issues (depression, etc) so in the moment, as they get bigger and bigger they probably feel helpless/there is no reason/way out
One of the things that gets me is how many of them lose weight on their own before surgery. If they would stick to a healthy diet they wouldn't have to take the risk of surgery.
Patience I was just thinking the same thing. When Dr. Now sends them home to lose weight on their own and they lose over 100 pounds why can't they just keep doing what they did to lose the 1st 100 lbs. Then after they get down to a decent weight they can have the excess skin removed, That way they won't have to keep driving back and forth to Houston eating a bunch of junk food. IMO that's why when they get there some of them not only don't show a weight loss but many gained.

When they're 700-800 lbs they lose weight pretty quickly. However, as their weight goes down so does the progress with the same effort. Its much easier to go from 800 to 700 lbs than from 300 to 270 lbs. So these people usually lose 20-30 lbs per month and that when they're the heaviest. It would take a long time to get to a normal weight - and some of these people don't have a long time.
