What was the point on having the player control Sarah at the beginning?

That was a sad moment indeed, it was hard to watch him lose his daughter right in front of his eyes. As for Sarah, the point is she realized that infected people were out there in droves picking off the humans. (the uninfected ones of course) When she saw the news on TV while looking for her dad.

Actually, I've just thought of another reason.
To build an emotional connection.
I mean, I wish she hadn't died and I think that's the point because it is actually our character Joel feels.

If you notice, Naughty Dog makes a deliberate attempt to make a connection between Ellie and Sarah through gameplay. We start the game playing Sarah, we end the game playing Ellie. Joel carries and protects a wounded Sarah at the beginning of the game, Joel carries and protects an unconscious Ellie at the end of the game.
It also happens in a mirror-like order: Play>Carrie Sarah , Carrie>play Ellie.
