Why did the mother leave?

I completely missed this part. Did pick up the middle finger though :D

I think it's pretty much implied that the whole "military husband, and kids with issues" was too much for her to handle.

This is why Braxton clearly hated her, gave er the finger, and in the climax of the film, says as much to The Accountant.

I hope this helps.

Usually when there are "kids with issues, it's the father who leaves.

But the writer of this mess wasnt overly concerned with realism.

Pretty in Pink also had the mother leave... it's not a rare occurrence...

I hope this helps.

I think that mothers take off or die more often the movies than in real life, because writers think that having no mother around gives a character more freedom or a more unusual backstory. Look at all the Disney heroes and heroines with a father but no mother!

But yeah, in the case of offspring with disabilities, its the father who's out 99% of the time. I see this in real life, and I think the writer if this mess just wanted to explore the idea of slapping autistic kids into shape rather than giving them appropriate therapy.

He was also a military (Army) guy... they (most of them) have more honor and responsibility... but it lent to the story to have the guy instill in his boys the dependency and comeradery of FAMILY... he was no "fantasy dad" either... and if it was such a "mess", why even bother commenting on it?

I actually thought it was one of Affleck's best works.... and I can't stand him...

I love Jon Bernthal though.... that's my boy!

"Appropriate therapy" is a joke and often just messes up kids worse than they were in the first place.

Thanks!
