Enjoyed reading your review. I do have a question I'd like to ask that doesn't seem to have been broached on this board:
It is implied that Ben Affleck's character has either Asperger's or simply high-functioning autism. Given that the very condition of autism itself exists on a spectrum, what kind of representation can actual autistics expect to see in the character?
I don't think this is a spoiler but just in case no one wants to know I'll throw the spoiler signs up.
Ben Affleck's character has autism in the movie. The movie takes a while before they reveal that but it's certainly implied that he has some sort of condition early on. He is said to have a high functioning form of autism. The character has difficulty socializing and also has many other traits that are unique onto himself. He needs to finish stuff when he starts them and it takes a toll on him mentally if he can't.
For me personally ,as someone who has family with autism, I thought it was handled extremely respectfully and was well thought out. If anything this movie sends a very positive messages towards people with autism. Affleck's character is complex and interesting, the autism adds another layer to that. As another side note the movie also deals with autism not just with him but it is a theme that runs throughout the movie. I love that this movie took a shot with adding this type of subject matter because it isn't something you'd normally see.
Thanks for the compliment and the question!
