The next Miyazaki

People have been saying Shinkai Makoto and Hosoda Mamoru are two directors who will be the next Miyazaki Hayao.
What do you guys think?

As a homage to Miyazaki's best films and an original entertainment, it doesn't get any better than this.
Shinkai Makoto's homage, Journey to Agartha was a pretentious bore, but this one was seriously good.

Real masterpiece, I think this film deserves same recognition as some of Ghibli's most famous films in the west.

Wolf Children was far better than Journey to Agartha, though I still enjoyed it.

Both Makoto Shinkai and Mamoru Hosoda have their own strengths as directors. I have all their dvds and look forward to whatever new projects they may be working on.

Can't stop the signal.

I don't really understand movie productions and only know how to watch it. Hehe. But I think they're all good, to say them to be "the next" is likely in my opinion. There are some movies from Miyazaki I really like, and there are I feel just not get to me. The same with the other directors. However, I'd always looking forward for their next movies.

But you're right, I wish this film deserves more recognition as Ghibli's. It's actually very enjoyable... as I'm in Indonesia, I think it already goes global. As for now I've watched the movie 5 times and still enjoy it, oh... call me a freak. Lol. :P

I don't like Shinkai Makoto's films.. trying too hard to be sappy and *beep* when 5 Centimeters Per Second and Voices from a Distant Star are *beep* boring. (plus ugly character designs) People just like those films because of the beautiful colorful backgrounds >_>

Hosoda Mamoru's films are much better, I almost cried when I heard Kawaranai Mono in The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Summer Wars was predictable but still good.

reply

Nah, I like those films because of the emotional strings they tug. Yes, the backgrounds are beautiful but so are the stories.

The character designs in Voices of a Distant Star might've been crude, but 5 Centimeters Per Second was gorgeous in every aspect, story, background, characters, etc.

I was not bored with any of his movies.

Can't stop the signal.

Agree. Makoto Shinkai's stuff can become a drag at times but 5 Centimeters Per Second was a great film, one of my favorites animes.

To OP: I don't think we should compare those 2 to Miyazaki. In fact I don't think anyone should try to fill his shoes. While it's true that his influence is easily seen in many animes, nobody can do it quite like he can. Also Shinkai and Hosoda are great animators in their own rights and they can figure their own styles and be successful without Miyazaki's shadow.

I definitely think Mamoru Hosoda has a shot at becoming the true successor to Hayao Miyazaki. I love all 3 of his films thus far, especially Wolf Children and Summer Wars. I haven't seen The Boy and the Beast yet but based on the trailers, it definitely looks promising. If his latest film and subsequent films (assuming that he will make any more) live up to the quality of Wolf Children and Summer Wars or even surpass them, I would consider him the next Miyazaki.
