Boat ending would've been perfect

Anyone else thought that the movie could've ended at the boat scene?

I know the happy ending fits the genre and it's what most people would like to see, but somehow it really felt like a missed opportunity to turn a somewhat good movie into a great one.

The "message" would also been cool, albeit different than what we're used to in typical rom-coms. They didn't need to end up together in the movie. I mean, she chose that relationship, she denied his advances, denied her feelings for him, etc. To me, his heart could've been dancing to the sound of friendship and family love.

The rom-com ending was very predictable (I still enjoyed the movie), but I think they could've chosen a different direction. Especially with the awesome actors they had in it.

What do you guys think?

I totally agree with everything you said!! The boat-scene ending would really make it a movie to remember. That happy ending is what we all want for the main characters but it trully makes the movie average because we all know that's not always real life!

Agreed! This movie seemed to be more about unrequited love than actually getting love.

A better ending would've been the boat scene, with Chris Evans character realising that meeting the woman opened him up to the possibility of falling in love.

The film did a great job at flipping the dynamics of a story like this. With Chris Evans becoming the "woman" of the romcom while Michelle Monaghan had a lot of masculine traits that I loved. It was a different set up to what we're used to.

Then they sell out with that awful and predictable ending. I thought the film was more self aware than that.

I like this idea. The whole section where he comes to appreciate his friends was surprisingly effective and touching, especially that boat scene. It would have been more interesting if it had ended with that sentiment.

In my opinion, the production cast such fun actors in the "friends" role that they overshadowed the main characters.

I totally agree, why did they have to have them end up together? Would have really been great with him realizing he has much love in his life and leave it at that.

I totally agree! It would have made it more real and in my opinion a better ending! But you know... people are not looking for realness in rom-com movies... But it was fun anyway.

Agree. When the boat scene came up, I actually thought it was the end until I saw the grandad was there. It would have made a great ending: He found love, but it wasn't meant to be and that was ok - he still had his friends and he proved he could actually fall in love. I would have had him and his friends sail into the sunset, having a great time. Instead, we get a predictable romcom ending that was a real yawn.

P.S. Agree that the friends stole the show too. I want to hang out with them too!

Yeah for me the boat ending would have been fine. A cool twist, excuse the movie title pun, would have been for Evans (did he or Monahan have actual names in the movie?) to realise he loved the Aubrey Plaza character back after Plaza's confession. The actual ending was OK, but it seems that Evans and Monahan's characters were indeed a couple heading for disaster. She likes to cheat and he should have been honest about why he lied about all that "charity" work. He could have said, "I used that as an excuse to find you because you impressed me the first night we met," or something.
