I like Rihanna but she was simply too young and haven't been in the game long enough to be given the award at this stage. I thought that it was an opportunity wasted that should have been given to TLC. TLC heavily influenced a lot of groups and people like Aaliyah, Rihanna, Ciara, Keri Hilson, Spice Girls, Destiny's Child, Xscape, etc....
It's not too late though, it can still happen.
Rihanna has made a LOT of impact in the music industry in just 8 years. TLC haven't been relevant for a very long time.
shareRihanna has had number ones, but her albums have had mediocre sales. And she is hardly influential talent wise. Without a machine behind her of producers and writers, I don't think she would have had as much success. This award was clearly bought by her label.
With that being said, TLC has not had enough impact either to be considered "iconic". They were successful and influential, but they had a very specific audience and they were local (fanbase mostly in the states). The fact that they have been out of the industry for 10+ years doesn't help matters. People throw the words "icon" and "legend" around too often.
Angelina Jolie. Liz Taylor. Bette Davis. Charlize Theron. Mae West.
I have to agree with Shoshone I'm not Rihanna fan at all but I do hate the idea of her being an icon...that is a strong title to have. I was going to ask the question about Rihanna album sells and if people buy her albums or do they like the singles Sho answered the question that she had mediocre sales.
I agree, I hope TLC gets The Icon Award some day even though I think its long over do
