Sorry if I'm late or if this has been discussed, but I saw alot of people online that weren't pleased with her acting.
My two cents, I think the biggest issue in this film was the writing. The dialogue was a bit cheesy and Drew's lines especially were kind of silly. Sometimes she seemed too rehearsed and forced, like she was reading cue cards. The look was down but yeah, she was not the highlight of the acting for me. I don't think she was as believable as the Left Eye character.
Angelina Jolie. Liz Taylor. Bette Davis. Charlize Theron. Mae West.
I think the most talked about is Lil Mamma playing Left Eye she blew that part out of the water it was like Left Eye was came on the set with her in spirit or something.
Drew was great as T-Boz she really pulled off the look of T-Boz really well and I love T-Boz hairstyles because they are so unique especially her haircuts. Then Drew when she talked sounded similar to T-Boz.
There's another thread on this board about Keke Palmer; looks like many were displeased with her portrayal of Chilli. IMO, all three actresses did a pretty good job with their roles.
Lil Mama painted Left Eye as a talented but deeply troubled spirit, and that's what most of us knew her to be. Keke (as Chilli) was sweet and warm whenever she felt good about herself and/or those around her, and fiery/mouthy when she felt she was being disrespected (e.g. waiting on Lisa to show up at the limo for TRL, going off on Dallas for always two-timing her, etc.). That's how I feel Chilli is - a pretty well-adjusted woman, but a highly passionate one nonetheless.
Drew, in some respects, had the toughest role because T-Boz, in many ways the leader of TLC, isn't easy to peg. Like Chilli, she had a maternal instinct, and because she in many ways had the strongest personality, was often seen as the leader. Some will disagree with that, but when I was a kid I often viewed T-Boz as the group's figurehead - she sang lead on the majority of the songs (definitely the singles), her demeanor seemed impenetrable, and heck, her nickname was short for "The Boss."
However, she was also battling a life-threatening illness that at times jeopardized her ability to fulfill her dream of being a successful performer and artist. She found herself at odds with both Chilli (due to being stuck in the middle of the Dallas drama) and Left Eye (due to Lisa's unpredictable nature), and I think Drew did a good job of illustrating that fine line between strength and vulnerability.
I think she did okay - the only thing that threw me off was the crazy aggressive faces she made (lip grunt thing) while dancing... I get she was trying to be hard as T-Boz was a tough tomboy, but the thing about T-Boz was that even though she danced hard like a boy her face was always cool.... moves on point, face on high (literally like she just lit up)
I will give Drew props for not being extremely overshadowed by Lil Mama ... in real life Left-Eye was such a big personality, but cool calm and collected T-Boz was never out-shined by her in group interviews or perforamces - you still knew T-Boz was The-Boss... I think Drew managed to carry this across well in the film
Palmer nailed the maternal and sweet aspect of Chili, but she didn't master the sex appeal - Keke is fine, but she didn't move as seductively as Chili in her performances
I think the dance performances were just as important as the acting because that's how the actual group expressed themselves to the world (TLC wasn't a group of Adeles), and thus a major way we identify with the characters... Lil Mama danced crazy and free like Left-Eye, which added to her already great performance
I actually love her in the role and feel she had the hardest part to play. She had to play a character which basically supports the other two characters (she was the glue) and manage to be noticed as well. Lil Mama stands out only because she had the most colorful character to play and because we're so used to seeing her as such a fail in real life, and Ke Ke is good because Chilli is such a bland personality all she has to do is show up, dance and be pretty.
Some people thought that Drew portrayed Tionne like a stud. It's a compliment because T had SSOOOO MUCH SWAG. It was natural but Drew was trying too hard in some scenes....
Drew, did a very poor job playing t-boz. imo, she failed to capture the very strong personality that tboz truly is. She was simply forgettable in her role, and that shouldn't be possible as the lead of TLC (blame the directors and producers for that as well). Plus the girl simply cant act . I havent seen her before and based on her performance in this movie wouldnt want to see her again on screen.
Keke i think also disappointed in her role to an extent. Yea she hit some of her cues and did a pretty good job of capturing Chillis essence. But im not so sure Keke is a good actress. Although i think shes very attractive in real life, i dont think she has the acting chops to cut it as an adult.
Lil Mama, was on point with her role. She captured the Left-eye essence i believe. She also clearly showed she has the talent and confidence to be a good actress. I doubted her casting before watching this but she was by FAR the best performance of the 3. She clearly displayed all the required emotions in her different scenes. I hope lil mama gets more roles in hollywood, she definitely has some talent.
Overall the movie sucked. THe pacing was good, it didnt linger in scenes/moments and kept right along. THe director should be blacklisted, they were terrible. Production as well.
THis movie could have been sooo much better if the direction and head knew what they were doing.
