My most favorite would be Temptations it really went into depth and I didn't know much about the Temptations I heard their music growing up from my dad. After the movie I felt like I knew each one of them.
Hmmmm....I would have to say The Temptations. In that biopic you really have some solid acting. Like you,I always heard their music but never really knew much about them. But after seeing the movie, when I listen to their music I have a greater appreciation for their music. But I have to say there story is so sad,I cried a few times during that film.
The Five heartbeats is fictional but it's sort of based on the story of several groups and artists combined though. I believe, but I could be wrong, that Sparkle is inspired by the Supremes as well.
"Don't they know they're making love to one already dead?!"
The Five Heartbeats was loosely based on the group called The Dells from Harvey, IL or Dolton, IL. Robert Townsend, who produced and starred in the film hails from Chicago, IL.
The Five Heartbeats is alright. Its very cheesy. And while the movie is fictional,I hear it was loosely based on the group The Dells who did all the singing in the movie.
I would say "The Temptations" too. I knew almost nothing about them before I saw the movie. I had heard some of the songs and I remembered my mom and dad playing the songs during their little gatherings when I was a kid but before I saw the movie, I had no idea that they had changed members so often. I remember the "Motown Merry Christmas" special and I thought that those were the original Temps. After the movie aired, I went to class and asked "Who was David Ruffin?" and almost got cussed out. When I think about it, I liked "The Jacksons: An American Dream" too but I guess I've watched it so many times that its just old to me now. I wish that this movie had been done on the same level as "The Jacksons" and "The Temptations". They were just better quality movies. They were able to go more in depth and was able to tell more of their story. To me this movie was just mediocre. Part of the difference is "The Jacksons" and "The Temptations" were both aired on a major network, given a bigger budget and both movies were aired over 2 nights. The TLC story seemed rushed to tell a 20+ yrs story in 2.5 hours minus commercials and that just wasn't enough time to tell the story effectively.
I'm surprised no one mentioned What's Love Got to Do with It. Like this TLC movie, they didn't show everything but it's one of the most memorable biopic movies IMO. And even though they haven't shown it in years, there was a Natalie Cole movie out that was pretty good and I like The Doors movie also.
I said in my first post I did forget some movies there were more...lol. I seen What's Love Got To Do with It, I was thinking about Ray that was based on Ray Charles, I remember the Natalie Cole movie (I never saw it). I'll say Whats Love Got To Do With It is one of the most quoted movies.
"The Five Heartbeats" isn't a biopic - it's a work of fiction derived from the histories of the Dells, the Temptations, etc. In that respect, it's essentially "Dreamboys" (without the recitative present in "Dreamgirls").
I was watching a little bit of Ray today at work on HBO and I never sat down and watched the movie. Jamie Foxx was amazing in that movie and looked just like Ray I want to buy this movie next time I see it in stores I'm getting it.
Temptations is one i want to get also I was tired of that movie because I kept seeing it on MTV (when they played music related stuff) or maybe it was VH1 now i want to see the movie again.
there have been rumors about it since 2009. Canadian r&b singer and 106&park host Keisha Chante was supposed to play her but she stated aaliyah's parents dont want it, but don't own enough of her estate to stop it but she wants to respect aaliyah's parents wishes
another rumor that surfaced earlier this year is that Beyoncé's sister Solange was gonna play the role. but still, a movie has not happened yet
