A little OT: 90 artists you thought would still be going strong today

I know in the 90s we had so much talented R&B singers and who knew that most of them would slowly fade away. Can you name some 90s artists you thought would still be making music today?

Toni Braxton - She did come with a new album a few years ago I don't think it did so well and then she keeps going bankrupt as well. I think she is back now working with Babyface.

Total - This was one bad music group I didn't expect them to stop making music at all. Both of their albums did really well in stores and after 1998 they just called it quits. I expected them to have kept going at least until 2005.

Tevin Campbell- He have such a great voice he is still one of my favorite singers but I really wanted him to continue going strong.

reply

Tevin could really sing the timbre of his voice reminded me of Whitney Houston.

I used to bump Kima, Keisha and Pam like it came out yesterday. I loved their second album.

Toni Braxton really fell off after THE HEAT and that was 14 years ago. Her health problems didn't help either; her voice is still good though.

Brandy and Monica were a big deal in the 90's. Beyonce and Rihanna kind of took their shine away. I wonder if the same would have happened to Aaliyah.

reply

I often wonder that myself if Aaliyah was alive would she still be going strong today. Ciara came in the music business I have a feeling Aaliyah would have been overshadowed by Ciara. I wish Mya could have been a success I feel like Ciara overshadowed her. I forgot to mention but Sisqo solo wise he was amazing his first album sold a lot his 2nd album was decent I think people slowly put him on the back burner.

*BRANDY - She was the biggest R&B Teen princess in the 90's. She was the classy more talented version of Rihanna. She was having hit after hit and she also had her own TV show! I am kind of sad to see the decline of brandy.

Aaliyah was going the Hollywood route. Would she have even been still making music? Ciara and Rhianna only became big because Aaliyah died. Speaking of Rhianna is she even R&B? Maybe her first album was, but not anymore.

Anyway all the greats from the 90s are still here though.. R Kelly, Maxwell, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys (ok she was 2001), Pink..(ok she is rock now), Beyonce, Usher,(ok they are crap now). OK not sure of the point I was making.

Toni Braxton- Loved her songs especially let it flow and another sad love song. Haven't heard any of her new songs.

Total- OMG I loved their song "Kissing You" and "Do You think about us".

SWV- Loved their song "Rain on Me". They were cool too.

702- Get it together was my jam.

Xscape- Understanding was one of their biggest hits.

There are many other girl/boy groups that I liked and eventually they all slowly faded away. I think Boyz II Men may be the only group that's still around today. There are NO girl groups around anymore. I just think the time for girl/boy bands were in the 90's. Most record companies are only looking for solo acts now. And most people are only looking out for themselves. They don't have time to be splitting money with two or three other people.

@Euro....I'm a huge Brandy fan and she has been putting out albums but she hasn't been popular lately. The last album she had success with was Full Moon after that she was put on the back burner. It is sad like you said she was so popular in the 90s and a great idol for teens and younger and even older people loved Brandy. Monica I hate that she isn't well known much anymore. Monica was an amazing singer and just like Brandy a great idol for teens and my mom love hearing Monica sing.

@Salt I hear what you saying about the artists. Pink her first album was very R&B and then the 2nd one she went pop/R&B and after that straight pop/alternative. Usher I lost interest in him pretty much after Raymond vs. Raymond that last album he put out was just straight crap. Beyonce I was listening to her first album "dangerously in love" and I miss that Beyonce her 2nd album wasn't bad either. Alicia Keys I would consider her 90s she did make some songs in 1997 she was on the Men In Black album and then she appeared as a musical guest on BETs Teen Summit.

@Lady.....I actually perfer music groups to solo artists. Because groups its fun trying to figure out who sing what and the sound and harmonies they have. Its a shame music groups aren't popular anymore you right the music business is pretty much all about promoting solo artists or people just want to be solo so they can have more money to themselves. I love that Boyz II Men is still going strong as a group even though Mike is out the group the 3 of them is continuing making albums and doing shows. Jagged Edge is still making music and is still together but no one is interested which is sad. I'm glad you mentioned 702 and Xscape.

reply

I don't find your list weird at all. You have have a great list. I also remember Lady of Rage.

reply

thanks. I always thought Rage would have landed another deal. She just ended up being guest starring on albums, and Acting on Steve Harvey show, Kenan & Kel, Next friday, ETC

Then again, female Rap, IDK, kinda started going downhill when Lil Kim and Foxy Brown came out and over-sexualized it

I never thought I'd see SWV and Toni Braxton go the route of reality TV

I love Jagged Edge ~~~~ I still listen to their music

Lauryn Hill.

reply

Lauryn Hill is different though. She released one BIG album back in 1998 and stopped recording, leaving fans and music critics hungry for more music. She's largely influential and is not forgotten. She's currently recording the follow-up to her "Miseducation of" album and there's no doubt that it will be hugely successful.

reply

Is she really? At least she didn't rush things and made a 2nd album that isn't worth listening to and people really forget her. I'm ready for another Lauryn Hill album I think I played this album so much there are scratch marks all over it.

I personally thought the group Jade was gonna blow up and stay around....but they fell off quick.

Shanice

ABC

Bone Thugs N Harmony although they are rappers.....I just knew they were gonna be around 4eva with their unique style.

Erykah Badu fell off a bit.

112 fell off.

End Vogue.....I'm still upset they fell off. I mean those voices were amazing.

Hi-Five....they were really good.

Soul II Soul.....will always have a special place in my heart. I thought they would be legends but they fell off too.

reply

Good list. Although Bone Thugs is still making music. They go solo and then come back together they aren't as big as they used to but between them all they have more records than R. Kelly and Michael Jackson put together.

reply

definitely Lauren Hill. when she performed Everything is Everything at the MTV awards in 99, i just knew she was here to stay. she faded away by choice tho and i HATED that cuz i loved her so much as an artist. she is/was truly one of the great ones.
