can TLC really sing?

I have questioned this for the longest. Chilli has a decent voice, but nothing to write home about. TBoz however doesn't have a great singing voice at all. Her voice bears resemblence to Macy Gray's meaning that its very unusual. I guess it their collective charisma that helped TLC become the super group TLC.

I love their singing. I love T-Boz's voice the most because it's unique.

T-Boz doesn't have a great voice? Her voice is one of the most beautiful, most unique voices to come into the music industry. Her voice was the symbol for TLC. When you heard her voice, you already knew who it was. That is what makes a great singing voice. Much like Toni Braxton.

To each its own.

I've been questioning this myself for years. Not the worst singers around but many people don't thing T-Boz can sing at all. They're no En Vogue's or SWV's but I guess they sing in a way that works for them. If TLC sang with that classic church voice it wouldn't have fit into the group's image at all.

reply

Yes.

Of course there were many other GG who could sing better, but TLC can sing.

They suck live. Love TLC, but I've always cringed at their live performances. Destined Child demolishes them singing wise. No contest.

That's why I've been questioning their singing abilities. A few years ago when Alicia Keys brought them and SWV on stage with her on the BET Awards TLC's singing wasn't nothing to write home about. Anybody can sound good in the studio and in videos. They were brilliant idea though.

reply

Yes. You put it perfectly Brown eyes. You can take a lamb & put it in the studio & give it the voice of a song bird. I recall seeing them at The VMA's back in the mid-90's....& T-Boz sounded horrible. She sounded like a smoker because she out of breath & her voice sounded extra raspy.

AS huge of a TLC fan as I was when I was a teen, I will admit that compared to some other girl groups back in the 90's (En Vogue, SWV) they were not as good. What I think made TLC stand out from the others was that all three women brought something different to the table that wasn't seen as much from other groups (T-Boz's voice, Lisa was a rapper, Chilli was the sexy soft soprano girl) and they had strong chemistry that showed to everyone (even the biggest TLC haters).

I've always thought that if they had been just like most other girl groups back in the day, Chilli would've been the main singer instead of T-Boz because of her voice. Except for one or two songs, don't often see altos or deep-voiced female singers become the main singers in girl groups like you do sopranos or high-voiced singers. So T-Boz having a deep singing voice AND be the main singer is one reason why they stand out.

reply

Yeah, that had a unique sound that was so TLC. On their records you know who's singing/rapping what part and it all blends together so well.

They are definitely more about an image and personalities than vocal talent. They all have unique vocal tones but it always made me wonder the fact that Debra Killing always sang background with them, and had various other background singers with them on studio albums to pad their vocals...

Wow, this is news to me. That's almost a Milli Vanilli move (and yes I know they sang) needing help like that.

To the one poster that posted Frenchie Davis thanks that lady can sing most of these today artists under the water....maybe even Jennifer Hudson.

TLC they are very unique. Yes there is a difference between singing and sangin'. Chilli do have a great singing voice I never heard her hit a Whitney or Stephanie Mills note. T-Boz I love her deep raspy voice it is like hearing Toni Braxton except Toni is more soulful and I've heard Toni hit high notes you can tell she has that church voice.

Remember this commercial of Left Eye in the Gap commercial from back in 2001.
She was singing some Left Eye has a nice voice she is more of a rapper.

To be honest, a lot of vocal groups over the years have used outside backup singers for assistance. The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Spinners, etc.

THen you have the groups where one person often sings all four harmony parts because it's faster/cheaper (pre-Michelle Williams Destiny's Child, Dru Hill, Jagged Edge, etc)

Debra Killings sings backup (and sometimes pads the lead) on upwards of 80% of the TLC catalog. There are TLC songs where one of the other girls does not appear ("SIlly H*" is T-Boz & Debra, "No Scrubs" is Chilli, Kandi, Tiny, & Debra). That's not to say that T-Boz or Chilli can't sing - but the album-making process can go faster with session singers, whose time to record is also not as limited by needs to make other appearances, attend promo photo shoots, etc.

Obviously, she's not there when the girls were in concert (save for perhaps her voice on a DAT tape), so your opinion of whether they (or anyone, really) can sing or not should probably be based upon live performances.

The 90s had En Vogue, SWV, Brownstone, Destiny's Child and a whole bunch of lesser known groups who were far far far far better singers, but none of them had the personality of TLC. It was their personalities that helped sell the group. They could sing but not really sing. BUT... Left Eye could rap, and I mean really rap.

Thinking about it now, I can see why in the movie she challenged the other two members of the group to release solo projects, coz in reality she was the only one with real, real talent. Sorry to say, but its a fact.

I think if Lisa was still alive today, she could out-rap many female artists that are out today.

reply

I believe she can too.

reply

I think to say that she was the only one with real talent kind of takes it a bit far. Lisa was extremely gifted, however, she was not the driving force behind their sound. Without Tionne's deep vocals I doubt the group would have had as much success as they did.

reply

Yeah, but could T-Boz and Chilli hav successful solo careers? Left Eye was just beginning to break out when she died. She done that song with that Spice Girl and was putting together an album. What did Chilli do?... Star as the love interest in an Usher video and I think T-Boz had a song everyone forgot. They are talented, no doubt... but not enough to sustain successful solo careers, especially back then when being able to sing and rap was more important than how big your ass is.

reply

TBH, I don't think T-Boz & Chilli would have successful solo careers (especially not now). T-Boz did have a couple of solo songs for some movie soundtracks & Chilli was Usher's love interest in some of his videos before they became a real life couple.

reply

I can probably see Chilli having a solo album with the right producers her singing isn't as bad as some of these mainstream singers today. T-Boz voice is unique and she was featured on some rappers songs and did a song with Raphael Saadiq and that was about it. I thought T-Boz would be the first one to go solo or getting solo record deals left and right. Usually, the front man in the group get the record deals.
