Everything i have heard said that Jessie wasn't friends or even associates with Damien and Jason...so why did the police single this random boy out for? was it because he was "slow" and under-age so they knew they could coerce him into a confession maybe?

It's possible they did say this somewhere and we haven't seen it or heard it i guess.
They did know eachother, saying they didn't is just more bs spin from the defense and the convicted. Many people have said they were friends.
