How could Hobbs have evaded detection?

Hobbs is the only other half decent option for being the killer, or one of the. However I can't figure out the timeline.

It's suggested that Hobbs killed them at a different location? He didn't chase them into the woods? Or follow them?

If that's what they are going for with a suspect it just seems impossible I mean literally impossible For Hobbs to get the three boys to the ditch bank? You can't drive a van into the woods and he can't carry them with him?

I know this film is heavily biased but Peter Jackson did himself a disservice when he dedicated such a chunk of the film to tarnish Hobbs as the likely murderer.

He's not a good option. Maybe not an option at all. The whole story about them meeting the kids by chance sounds highly improbable.

It's Mark Byers all over again. The whole thing involving the hair found at the crime scene is meaningless. Hobbs was one of the victim's step dad. The kids frequently visited their place. And it's not even a definitive match.
