"She's a smart girl..."
"...she'll know to get to a higher floor."
Yes, exactly! It's been discussed how irresponsible Ray is: everyone else can die horribly, as long as he saves his precious daughter -- first responder wha? But what's further disgusting is the fact that she's not in dire need of being saved. We're shown repeatedly that Blake is smart, capable and brave. She doesn't *need* SuperDaddy to fly to her rescue, literally or figuratively. If not for the tsunami, she could easily have stayed alive, along with her two new BFFs, and met up with her parents in a day or two,*after* Dad had done his *freaking job* and helped everyone else.
Seems like one reason the tsunami was in the script, besides kewl SFX, was so Blake would be in a predicament she couldn't think her way out of. Well, that and the wet t-shirt visual. Quite honestly, I would have found this more plausible if she was the main character. Like, she learned all these survival skills from her father, with him being a side character only seen at the beginning and end. Dad could do what first responders are supposed to do, while the daughter would be the everyday hero, keeping Ben and his brother alive. Maybe have some other characters hook on to them. As it is, it would have served Ray right if he'd lost his daughter, the way other people no doubt lost their loved ones due to his negligence.
