Apologies if I might have missed this but did they ever mention his significant other(s)?

Near the end, they do mention that he fell in love with someone in South Africa and he had a son with her. I don't believe she ever seen, however, and they didn't detail the status of the relationship (did she move to America? Are they still together?).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it was his daughter who fell in love with a South African and Sixto now has a South African grandchild.

It was his oldest daughter that met and fell in love with the South African bodyguard they had during their first trip there. They had a son and it was commented that Rodriguez now has a half American, half South African grandson.

In the extras, they show Rodriguez and the director answering questions at the Tribeca Film Festival from audience members from all over the world. One woman introduced herself and was from Detroit. He smiled when he recognized the name and said she was a good friend of his wife. That was the only time that him having a wife was even mentioned. I'm assuming she is simple and humble like he is, and chose not to be in the film.

Like in many things, Rodriguez goes his own way. In an article I read sometime ago, he is still married but they don't live together. The house he's lived in for 40 years is one that was just a shell when he acquired it. Broken windows, no furnace, no running water, no bathroom or kitchen fixtures. He's repaired the house through sweat labor, acquiring the bits & pieces from other demolished homes till it has become livable so that it meets his needs. His wife & daughters found the area just too sketchy, too unsafe so they live somewhere else, probably the suburbs. Apparently he & his wife are still deeply in love. It's a relationship that works for them so who am I to judge? He creates beautiful music and has many admirers, not the least of them are his wife and daughters.
