I was thinking the same thing when I watched the movie. It seems as if the 60's and 70's were ripe with outlandish rumors about rock stars that people believed, like John Lennon putting a secret message in a song to tell the fans that Paul McCartney was dead. In the Internet age, I think it would be a bit harder for these types of rumors to gain traction. Sure, from time to time rumors spread on the Internet that a celebrity is dead, but it usually only takes a few hours for their publicist to put the word out that the rumors are false.
