Doss' false equivalency
Desmond Doss, as portrayed in this film, truly is an irritatingly stupid man. His ultimately confrontational 'choice' of refusing to pick up his rifle for training purposes is maddening enough that I wouldn't blame someone for turning the movie off at that point.
To Doss, even picking up the weapon is the same as firing it. A normal, intelligent brain doesn't criss cross this separation like that. Unfortunately, the film doesn't address other potential weapons that Doss would have to make his idiotic choice with. For instance, is he against carpentry because of hammers? Does Doss refuse to help prepare dinner because of knives?
The minimum that was asked of Doss was to drill and train alongside the very men that Doss wanted to take bullets for him in combat.
