I don't want to like this film

Ghetto struggle. Typical hood stuff. Cops. Drugs. Prostition. It would be if the same struggle could take place in a different environment. Not sure about the kid pursing a casting gig in Hollywood or Jordin Sparks or Anthony Mackie as a thug(see 8 Mile).

Now having said that the two kids as leads and their bond, Jeffrey Wright and Mr. Tillman make this film very interesting. Right now it is definitely a must see DVD rental. The only thing preventing me from seeing this is the hood angle since I'm tired of seeing those same stories.

Have you seen the trailer? It looks like it might be a good drama because it's focusing on these two kids and their fight for survival in a cruel world. I love tough,little indie films about the underdog like that.

While I agree the "hood angle" has been played to death, this film was well done. All the acting was top notch, the music was great, and the director also did a good job of not making the movie too heavy handy. There were a lot of funny moments and a few touching ones, with just enough plot to keep the story moving.

The tone of the film is what I think really sets it apart. Even though it has those familiar elements you mention (cop, drugs,prostitution) never did it feel like "I've already seen this before".

It will be interesting to see if the film finds a larger audience when it's released.

I hope it finds a wider audience, but I believe it's been sold to HBO and this is a limited engagement.

Exactly----that's the same way I felt about the film---it felt fresh and brand new,and minus any of the usual 'hood movie cliches/tropes, mainly because it focused on these two kids trying to survive on their own, and not on them trying to sell drugs or anything like that.
