Towards the end of the film, Eric's character puts a slide show involving pictures from his childhood. Everyone is cracking up and makes jokes from slide to slide, then all of a sudden when various erotic slides make their way randomly into the slide show, everyone's mentality changed from wisecracking to somewhat depressed. Can someone please why this change of attitude happened?
Personally I think it was the natural culmination of their inability to be anything but ironic. It is easy for them to make ironic comments about the mundane, but when something truly shocking occurs, they are at a loss, because what would be ironic about making a joke about porn? Nothing, because it would be completely obvious. In fact, their reaction could even be interpreted as being ironic in itself, since who reacts like that to porn?
shareI thinks it says something too about the fact that they would profane even that, even their own childhood memories and sentimental attachments. And it just makes it all the more sadder that it doesn't even get a laugh. No one cares. Or maybe it stirs some last tiny flicker of humanity in them, making them reflect on how pathetic it is.
shareI think the slideshow was not really the character's family. It was probably a stack of abandoned/trashed slides found at a thrift shop or flea market. And for kicks he wanted to see what was on the slides.
It begins harmless enough where he is trying to make up a funny snarky story to go with the slides ala MST3K, but then they kind of get bummed out at their vacuous attempt at amusing themselves and retreat to their inner selves & pasts in a rare fleeting moment of self reflection.
A lot of these "hipsters" come from different parts of the USA to come to Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY to pursue their dreams of art in the big city. S they are all transplants & strangers who left family behind or just might be a little homesick since they are not native NYers and have no family locally..
That's a pretty interesting take on it. I never thought of that, but I could totally see those guys doing something like that, just sitting down and watching someone else's old slides. I'd have to watch that scene again.
