Why is this a film?

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad film. That being said, there's no plot or character progression. There is only premise. So why make this into a full-length feature at all? Wouldn't it have been more powerful as a short, or a novella? Or better yet, a mock children's book. There simply wasn't enough substance to stretch across 95 minutes.

So OP asks a question, and you basically say, "if you don't already know the answer, then you never will. Loser."?

You're a bit of a pretentious prick, aren't you?

People often times call these types of films "Character Studies". The film's message is delivered more through the character's behavior/interactions in various environments, and less through a unified and defined story/plot. They are tough to pull off, but usually pretty different and interesting. A lot of Paul Thomas Anderson movies are like that - he can pull it off spectacularly well.

I like films like this because they make you think. The film doesn't treat the audience like they are children or idiots... you have to use your head to figure things out.

There were many scenes that were pretty powerful because what's going through the characters head isn't given to us. What the audience is given is a situation and we need to relate somehow, someway.

So what happens to this man in the film? His dad is dying and he seems to be going through divorce. So think about how those 2 things affect his actions throughout the film.
