I'm a bit confused....(spoiler if you haven't seen movie yet)

Just watched this last night on Netflix. I am a bit lost about the whole Hunter/Wyatt bit. At first I thought Robbie was supposed to be Hunter since he was with Katie.

It is later revealed that both Robbie and Wyatt are adopted and that Wyatt is supposed to be Hunter? That is where I am confused. How did this other family end up with Wyatt/Hunter? Or is Robbie really Hunter and they just want another kid?

I skimmed through some of the posts and didn't find anyone else confused on this topic. Unless I missed it. Which is entirely possible.

Wyatt is Hunter. Katie gave him up for adoption at some point (offscreen).
Why she did is not explained. I truly believe this was because Katie wanted to escape detection. The police would have been looking for a young female with a young child, not a young woman alone.

Second, a virgin (Alex) was needed for the ceremony & so she too was victimized.

Robbie's origins are yet to be explained also, but he was brought in to the situation to introduce Toby the demon to Wyatt/Hunter in a non-threatening way.

Also, Robbie helped Wyatt understand his past & to start using his powers (remember how the literature Ben read said that the chosen had to prove themselves to the demon.
Wyatt/Hunter did this by levitating Alex in her sleep.

If the Police would have been searching for a Young woman with a child, Katie would still fit the criteria, now having this Robbie kid....or when do you think he appeared? Where did he come from anyway? This is hardly explained and I hope they will come up with something to explain all this in a good way in a future installment.

Another question: It's been a while since I've seen the fourth movie. How exactly was Alex part of the ritual and when was it said that a virgin was needed for the ritual?

I don't think possessed Katie was literally 'walking' around with Robbie.
I think he just came from (wherever that is) and joined Katie at the house she pretended to move into.
I doubt she was truly 'caring' for him, he was just a helper.
His origins are not explained as of yet. But he was brought into Hunter/Wyatt's life to make his introduction to Toby a 'smoother & calmer' one.

When Alex & Ben are researching the history of the demon, they read the steps that the chosen child (Wyatt/Hunter) must perform to be ready for the demon's possession.
There is a ritual involved, one step is the sacrifice of a virgin.

These issues confused me as well and are part of the reason I didn't enjoy this as much as the others. I'm hoping they tie it all together in the next few movies so I won't be confused and then I'll like this movie more. Perhaps Robbie isn't a real child at all and is Toby in the flesh taking on whatever form he chooses. I thought it would've been cool if Robbie was the real Hunter and Wyatt was this angelic neighbor child with special God-given powers to perform miracles. Katie and Hunter would try to destroy him in a battle of good vs. evil. But maybe I'm just watching too much Exorcist 2. 

Wyatt is Hunter. Two movies later, and we still don't have an explanation about how he ended up in adoptive care though. This to me is one of the biggest dangling threads in the PA mythos (along with who the real dad is of Kristi/Katie). It was pretty lazy to have the big twist completely negate the ending to the one of the movies. Katie had him last, how did this family end up with him? Why would she give him up just to have to go through the trouble of all this to get him back later?

This movie was the beginning of the downfall of the PA universe. They were actually watchable up until this one, which took a big dump on the PA formula that had worked so well...
