SPOILERS - I was expecting a different ending.

First, I really liked this movie. The first few minutes of it aren't that great and I was tempted to stop watching right then and there but I gave it more of a chance and I'm glad I did because it only got better. And when I say first few minutes, that's what I mean. I didn't like the opening sequence at all but as the movie went on, I let it slide.

Towards the third act of the movie when Clyne started talking about the condensate as a weapon, I began to think that DARPA created it and sent him out there specifically because he'd be the one person capable of creating a counterweapon. Going all the way back to the beginning of the movie when he created the tetrazine gun, that foreshadowed his ability to create something as elaborate as the plasmic discharge weapons. The timeframe of creation could've been done better though. Slowing down the pace of the movie might've helped a bit.

Also, in the beginning when the investors asked if the tetrazine gun could be tested on humans and with the whole "war is profit" conversation that followed, I immediately thought as the plasmic weapon was being built that DARPA financed the regime to create the condensate weapon and used Clyne to create the counterweapon; both of which can be sold to the highest bidders.

Even more far-fetched, when the condensate being looked at Clyne, maybe it was programmed to recognize him and not kill him.

At the end of the movie, I thought the two DARPA investors featured at the beginning were gonna be there in the lab somehow and present the big reveal to Clyne. The way the camera had shots of Orland during the creation of the plasmic weapons, I thought he was in on it. Fran accompanying Clyne into the lab where I thought the investors would be; I thought she'd be in on it too, especially when she tried to stop Clyne from pulling the final plugs.

I think this could've been a really good self-contained two-and-a-half hour movie but as it is, I do hope there's a sequel that makes the story bigger and maybe even wraps things up properly. Other than the first few minutes, my biggest complaint is that the super condensate being wasn't better designed. It was like cloud Galactus or cloud Parallax. I was glad they went that route because it made sense that it could happen and I was kind of expecting it but they could've made it look better. Still, I'm glad I got to see a good, smart movie. I was entertained so the movie did its job.

Your comments are very interesting, especially with regard to the DARPA investors and that they may have initially funded the creation of the condensate beings project. The investors are interested in profit and the marketability of the weapons of war, knowing that the effectiveness of killing increases the value of the weapons. It is conceivable that they funded the creation of the condensate beings as weapons without regard for the pain suffered by those in the lab.

If this was true, the movie could have had a quick shot of the investors in another location (not the lab) finding out about the shutdown of the lab so that we know they were behind it. This would have added just another minute or two to the movie and would have helped tie the beginning of the movie and the end together.

I agree that the first few minutes weren't very good and I was also tempted to turn it off, but I'm glad I watched the whole movie.

SPOILERS
The whole point of the scene with the investors in the beginning was to show that despite working for DARPA, Clyne was principled and was against the abuse of technology to kill. That leads to the payoff when he unplugs all the hosts' nervous systems instead of preserving them like Fran wanted him to.
