How do people know these vhs tapes exist? And who put them in the house?

They broke into the house and they found VHS tapes.

There's something wrong with Esther.

What I don't quite get is how they didn't assume the first tape must be the one they are looking for. You'll know it when you see it - wouldn't you think any of those tapes were bizarre enough to be what you must be searching for?
