McCarthy is Hilarious, but...

...she needs to get some new material. This character is basically the same one she played in Bridesmaids, Identity Thief, and The Heat. She has an adorable side to her and her one liners when she goes into a rant are gut busting funny, but she's done it all before. This movie paired her with Susan Sarandon and should have been a classic buddy/road comedy. Sadly, it didn't match up. There were some comical moments and outright laughs, but just like in The Heat, it seemed as if everything was written just so McCarthy could go into a snit and spout a couple of funny one liners. She has so much potential and its being wasted in these kinds of roles.

Kathy Bates and Mark Duplass made the most of their time on screen. The always reliable Bates was wily as an older lesbian who gives Tammy a verbal kick in the butt. Duplass was very understated in this love interest role compared to his roles on The League and The Mindy Project. His character is a nice guy who sees Tammy for who she is, not what she is. Allison Janey, Toni Collette, and Sandra Oh were underutilized but still game in their roles. They seemed to be doing this as a favor to McCarthy as their roles were minor and didn't contribute much to the plot. Gary Cole, playing the geezer dad of Duplass' character was wasted.

I give props to the production (which consists of writer McCarthy and her husband, director Ben Falcone) for playing the lesbians straight (no pun intended). They were not portrayed as anything other than what they are: normal people seeking love and success like the rest of us. A less sensitive production might have played them off as femiNazis or zealots. Good job!

Tammy had some very funny moments (Tammy and her grandmother discussing their private areas is one of the funniest) and its hard not to like McCarthy, but she has so much more to offer an audience and hopefully she finds a project soon that is worthy of her talents. I, for one, hope she finds it soon.

My memory foam pillow says it can't remember my face. I can tell its lying.

I agree, she needs a vehicle which does not focus on her weight. She's a funny actress and I'm anxious to see what she does in the 2016 Ghostbusters.
