Thought this film was really original

Very good horror film. I haven't seen one like this in awhile and it was well done. But the ending confused me. Did he kill himself because he had a delusional hallucination that all the girls he killed were killing him out of guilt?

Your thread title is funny when you consider this is a remake.

In regards to your question I thought both the original and the remake were that he hallucinated the girls/mannequins attacking him.

reply

Oh had no idea this was a remake. Ok yeah, I figured as such.

I don't know if you are being facetious about not knowing this was a remake, but just in case: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081114

Why would I be being facetious about that? It's not like it's a famous classic horror film that everyone knows about. I was actually trying to just be civil to your pretentious response. And again, you respond with something quite rude. Thanks for the link, but I already went to the imdb page for the original and checked it out myself. Gosh what the heck is up your butt.

Yeah ok.

I said I didn't know if you were being facetious (which btw means the same as "tongue-in-cheek"), and then just in case you weren't - I linked the original movie as a courtesy for you. Your response is to insult me?

Wow.

Good luck in life there. 

I know what facetious means. Which is why I asked why you think I would be being cheeky about asking a legit question and saying I thought it was original and even when you responded I said "Ah okay, didn't know it was a remake, I figured that's what the ending was." A normal civil response. I just don't see how on earth that is perceived as being cheeky. Who is facetious about that sort of thing? Even if it was a remake it can still be original. Like the newest poster said which I agree on. "funny that you say this is original when it's a remake" is a bit pretentious and also presumptuous to think I would just be being cheeky when I obviously didn't know it was a remake and responded in a way that proved I understood what you explained. If I had to ask a question about the ending, obviously I don't know it's a remake.

Then you assuming I don't know what facetious means. Again, presumptuous and pretentious. But I'm the rude one here? Just defending myself in what I deemed a somewhat rude response for no reason? All you could have done was answer my question. Like the last poster has done. Which was respectful and civil.

As I said - Yeah, OK. 

The original is indeed a classic and pretty well known in most horror circles.

This was a very original film, remake or not. It did its own thing quite well, and only uses the first film as a basic framework. I would recommend the first if you like good old fashioned practical gore effects. It has a scene of a fake head getting blown off with a real shotgun. The kind of stuff that nobody does anymore, from the days when special effects were dangerous. This is one of my top favorite movie remakes of all time.

In answer to your original question: I believe he was mortally wounded before the final hallucination of the girls, and that is what caused his death. I need to watch it again, as I have the memory of a goldfish.

reply

Yeah I agree, completely. Remakes can be done differently, have a different spin, be more modern, new ideas etc etc. Sometimes remakes really do just take the core idea and use their own creativity from there. I'd like to see the original now though.

reply

I agree this is one of the best remakes in recent years, just a shame it didn't get the push to cinemas that it deserved.

I would have enjoyed watching this in a theater with squeamish mainstream audiences who didn't know what they were getting into. I'm sure many thought this was going to be like Scream, and I'm equally sure those idiots were well disappointed. Oh well. It would not have fared well at the box office. I'm sure Maniac has a long cult life ahead of it, ripe with midnight art house screenings, and winning new fans over the next 30 years. Just like the original.

When watching the remake, I tear up every time Wood catches his reflection after the car park murder, and the shot emulates the original Maniac's poster art. I would call that one of many masterful aspects of this film. It is very self aware, and respectful of it's source. It feels more like a loving fan film than a remake. I love that.

That's probably my favorite part of the film.
