I thought the purpose of them gathering and living in the crates was to "rid" themselves of the bad men in their lives and learn to love oneself before jumping into another relationship that is doomed to fail. Somewhat of a retreat of sorts.
I thought it was hilarious that Holly Hunter in the end just upped and left the ladies indicating she was sick of all their whining and crap. I could be wrong though...just my interpretation.
