Obnoxious moment in #1.7

When Tui shoots Matt Mitcham before he can kill the baby she's making these hissing reptilian noises. Is that supposed to mean that the human mother automatically reverts to a reptilian state when her brood is threatened? Really?

I think it means that she's 12 and acting like a 12 year old would to get people away from her. She obviously doesn't care too much about being protective of the baby, as evidenced by her casual disregard for his care later on. "You watch him". And leaving him to go get pizza...like a 12 year old would.

Still the hissing is downright creepy!

Rewatching the series for about the 4th or 5th time now and I thought about this scene again.

I think by this point, Tui has become almost feral after having been alone in the wilderness for so many months, being stressed out over the birthing procedure/bleeding, having the trauma of Jamie's death and then the extreme pain/trauma/stress of the birth itself.

At this point, I think such a reaction would actually be natural from anyone under the conditions she has had to endure. Almost as if this and the shooting is all she has strength for at this point.

When she later seems dismissive of the baby, that too is a pretty natural reaction from a 13 year old for any responsibility or draw from their own lives.

I think the hissing indicates the extreme stress of the moment...and probably also because she subconsciously knows that Matt was the father of her baby.

I'm still wondering that, if Al was the father and not Matt, why was Matt trying to kill the baby. Was he trying to protect Al? Why would he do that if Al raped his daughter? I'm still confused about the ending.
