About 15 years ago a person published a book comparing perceived risk vs real risk. One statistic which was a hot button at the time was internet predators. He calculated that a child had a 1/250,000 chance of interacting with a predator over the internet, but that same child had a 1/100 chance of being molested by a family member or close family friend. Guess which one got all the press?
Given how formulaic it has become as a titilating theme, I wonder now if life is starting to imitate art and these shows are unintentionally promoting this behavior as common rather than presenting it as rare and despicable.
