The 90's issue

So, apparently, Zoe Kazan has stated that Whedon wrote the film in the early 90s, and that the film is basically set in that era. While that explains the main issue I have with the film (why the two of them just didn't use cell phones/bluetooth while talking to each other so no one will suspect), I'm curious about something. The film itself was set in present day (pretty sure I saw a cell phone or two). Wouldn't it have been smarter to set it in the 1990s? Doing that would mean the film makes a definitive statement about the way we interact now versus before we had cell phones/internet.

So before we had cellphones we interacted telepathically?

reply

Not really...just showing the way we look at people who "talk to themselves" out loud now versus then. We used to only rely on people who were very close to us geographically. Now we can reach out to anyone on the planet. Seems that the film had the potential to explore those issues if set in the 90s.

People had cell phones in the 90's. They weren't as cheap as they are now, so a lot less people had them, but they were still a more common thing than you think. Bluetooth wasn't a thing though.

Rebecca's phone looks more modern and I think she said her car was 2010 model and Dylan says the car part wouldn't break in just a couple of years. I don't think this movie is set in the 90's. Rebecca just wasn't smart enough to use a bluetooth to deter suspicion and I don't think Dylan owned a cell phone at all. He pretends to be using one at one point and the guy at the bar points to a sign that says "no cell phones".

You missed the ops point. In the 90s if you were in a cash line at a grocery store and the person in front of you was carrying on a conversation with an invisible person you would think they are crazy. Today when it happens you think what ever.. They are a loser with a Bluetooth ear piece talking in public.

Reminds me of an article I read a while ago that some screen writer stated that he would only write scripts set in the pre-omni-cellphone/facebook era, because it would be impossible to write a story set in today's day and age without having the characters constantly look at their phone screens instead of actually talking :D

Oh my god, I would love to read that article if you remember who the screenwriter was!

You heart me? What is that? Is that like I love you for pussies?

I'd like to read that article too!
