Why did Phillip get rid of Rebecca's pictures? Why lie about getting rid of them?

When she was drunk Rebecca kind of hinted that he reasoned something like that.
Yes he did want to protect her in a way, but he was actually very controlling, he wanted to just wipe out her past, which isn't the way to help her at all!
Every time she had a 'fit' he got annoyed with her instead of sympathetic! He loved her but he was embarrassed by her. What others thought was more important to him than her health.
